Older Americans Month and Senior Citizens Day

"Loving Life, Helping Others, Supporting Communities"

Each May is observed nationwide as Older Americans Month. Together with Senior Citizens Day (the third Tuesday in May - May 20 this year), Older Americans Month is a celebration of the contributions our older citizens have made to society and a chance for communities to give back and recognize the accomplishments of their elders. It is also a time to promote aging actively and encourage everyone, regardless of age, to live life to the fullest.

Ohio's theme for Older Americans Month 2008 is "Loving Life, Helping Others, Supporting Communities."

Ohioans of all ages - but especially older Ohioans - can live full and satisfying lives and contribute to making the state a better place through caregiving, volunteerism, employment and family and community leadership.

Communities are like families in that their strength lies in the interactions of their members. Just as older Ohioans are the foundations of their families, they can also be the cornerstones of their communities, serving as leaders, mentors and role models. They support their communities through volunteering, caregiving and other activities. They also are integral to a strong economy and can be valuable asset to employers through re-careering, re-entering the market, getting job training and more.

Communities and organizations throughout Ohio are hosting special events to celebrate Older Americans Month and Senior Citizens Day. Events can include health fairs, dinners, trips, contests and more.

Event hosts and planners: As always, we encourage local senior centers, community leaders, advocates and others to plan activities for Older Americans Month and Senior Citizens Day. We have prepared a Planning and Promotion Guide to help you organize your event and tell your community about it.

Then, after your event is planned, come back to add it to our statewide list of Older Americans Month and Senior Citizens Day activities.
