Nursing homes are an integral part of our long-term care system. Nearly 1,000 facilities statewide provide a range of care services for an estimated 84,000 Ohioans.
All nursing home residents have irrevocable rights, including the right to make informed decisions, the right to be free from discrimination and restraints and the right to have visitors.
Many nursing home residents have family and friends who visit them regularly. Others seldom have visitors and some have no one to visit them. Visitors help residents stay connected to the world around them and give them a sense of friendship and belonging.
People who visit nursing home residents also have a unique opportunity to recognize and support their quality of care and quality of life. Engaged visitors can support the mission of the Office of the State Long-term Care Ombudsman, which works together with residents and facilities to resolve issues and promote excellence in care.
FOR ALL OF THESE REASONS, I, TED STRICKLAND, Governor of the State of Ohio proclaim December 24 through 31, 2007, as Visit a Nursing Home Week.
I encourage all Ohioans to bring their holiday celebration, fellowship and compassion to the nursing home of their choice and witness firsthand the measures facilities, residents and advocates are taking together to ensure quality, consumer-directed care.
On this 19th day of December, 2007;
Ted Strickland
Governor
