Text of Governor's Proclamation

State of Ohio
Executive Department - Office of the Governor

IN RECOGNITION OF NATIONAL LONG-TERM CARE PLANNING MONTH

At least 60 percent of people over age 65 will require long-term care services at some point in their lives. The likelihood of needing care increases with age.

Most people first learn about long-term care when they or a loved one need care, a time when options are often limited by lack of information, the immediate need for services and insufficient resources to pay for preferred services.

Long-term care planning helps Ohioans understand what service options are available, what those services cost and how they may pay for them. Having this information helps ensure you will have a range of options when you need long-term care, and makes it more likely that you will have choice and control over where and how you receive services.

Ohio has a broad array of long-term care options, covering the continuum of care from home health care services for people who need some help to remain independent in their homes; to assisted living/residential care facilities where residents need some help with the day-to-day activities of life; to nursing facilities that offer residents more medical services than those available through other options.

The skilled staff of Ohio's twelve Area Agencies on Aging can help begin the process of long-term care planning by explaining the options available and the necessary steps to access those options.

FOR ALL OF THESE REASONS, I, TED STRICKLAND, Governor of the State of Ohio proclaim the month of October 2007 as Long-Term Care Planning Month in Ohio. I urge all Ohioans to work with their loved ones and community resources to create a long-term care plan, which will allow more control over their future and ease the emotional and financial stress for their families.

On this 27th day of September, 2007;

Ted Strickland
Governor
