WHEREAS, it is the privilege and duty of the Governor to recognize occasions of outstanding significance; and
WHEREAS, an estimated 80,000 Ohioans reside in Ohio's nearly 1,000 nursing homes, where they receive around-the-clock care and services they need to live comfortably; and
WHEREAS, the Advancing Excellence in America's Nursing Homes campaign encourages facilities to improve the quality of care they provide and acknowledges the critical role nursing home staff have in providing care; and
WHEREAS, all nursing home residents have irrevocable rights, including the right to make informed decisions, the right to be free from discrimination and restraints and the right to have visitors; and
WHEREAS, the Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman advocates for consumers of nursing homes, works to resolve complaints about services, helps people select a provider and offers information about benefits and consumer rights; and
WHEREAS, visitors to nursing homes can be the eyes and ears of the Ombudsman office while providing friendship and valuable social interaction for residents during the holiday season and throughout the year;
NOW THEREFORE, I, BOB TAFT, Governor of the State of Ohio, do hereby proclaim
December 24-30, 2006
as
"Visit a Nursing Home Week"
throughout the State of Ohio. I invite all Ohioans to visit the nursing home of their choice, talk with residents and staff and learn more about the rights of residents and the measures facilities are taking to ensure quality, consumer-directed care.
