Strickland, Department of Aging To Present Elder Caregiving Award to Nancy Meacham
Warren Resident Honored in Columbus at Annual Award Ceremony

COLUMBUS - Governor Ted Strickland, Barbara E. Riley, Director of the Ohio Department of Aging, and members of the Ohio General Assembly will honor Nancy Meacham, of Warren, and 11 other caregivers for their dedication and compassion at the fourteenth annual Elder Caregiving Awards ceremony at the Statehouse Atrium in Columbus from 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23.

"Family members and informal caregivers truly are the backbone of our long-term care system. Ohio caregivers provide 80 percent of all long-term care services that would otherwise cost Ohio taxpayers more than $10.4 billion each year," said Riley. "Nancy Meacham is a vivid example of caregiver sacrifice, having given up a successful career to help her parents care for her sister."

Nancy is the primary caregiver for both her mother, Esther, 98, and her sister, Sally, 56, who was born with severe birth defects. Nancy's care enables both to remain at home.

The Elder Caregiving Award symbolically honors the thousands of Ohio caregivers who lovingly take care of family and friends day after day. Although the award is given only to a few caregivers, it heightens public awareness of the contributions of all caregivers.

Bios and photos of the 2007 Elder Caregivers of the Year are on the Department of Aging's Web site. Thirteen individuals will also be inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame at the event.
