Falls Due to Foot Pain Can Be Prevented

Normally a foot shouldn't hurt, yet foot pain is a fact of life for many. Nearly half of Americans will experience foot problems at some point in their lives, says a recent study by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA).

More than 11 million seniors - one out of every three people age 65 or older - have foot problems. This is twice the rate of the total adult population with foot problems. Whether it's from a medical condition, the "wrong" shoes or some other factor, foot problems make walking difficult and can make older adults more susceptible to falling. Balance and healthy feet can help an older adult on his feet and in his home.

Some types of foot pain demand a trip to the doctor, but there are some at-home remedies for minor wear-and-tear aches.

Simple exercises such as toe raises and toe curls can help build flexibility and strength and reduce foot pain. To do them, sit with your feet flat on the floor; raise your heels and hold for 5 seconds. Clench your toes and touch your toenails to the floor; hold for 5 seconds. Repeat ten times.
